Voting Atlas

How countries vote in the UN General Assembly
About the Atlas

Privacy policy (Datenschutzerklärung)

Voting Atlas collects as little as possible: no cookies, no user accounts, no advertising and no content from third parties — fonts and all other files come from our own server. This page explains what is processed when you use the site, in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

2. Delivering the website

When you open a page, your browser sends technical information that is needed to deliver it: your IP address, the requested address, the time, and your browser’s identification (user agent). We use this only to deliver the page and to keep the service secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Our applications do not write IP addresses or user agents to log files or databases.

The site is hosted by:

OVH SAS, 2 rue Kellermann, 59100 Roubaix, France (data centre in Beauharnois, Canada)

The hosting provider processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR).

The server is located in Canada, outside the European Union. The European Commission has decided that Canada ensures an adequate level of data protection (Art. 45 GDPR, Decision 2002/2/EC), so no further safeguards are required for this transfer.

3. Visitor statistics

To learn which parts of the Atlas are useful, we count page views with our own software. No external analytics service is involved, and no cookies or other data are stored on your device.

We record:

To count unique visitors per day, our server calculates a one-way code (hash) from your IP address, your browser’s identification and a random key that is valid for one day only. Only this code is stored — never the IP address or the browser identification. The daily key is deleted when the day ends; after that, the code can no longer be recalculated or linked to you, and visits on different days cannot be connected.

Legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Search terms are deleted after 90 days, all other records after 13 months.

If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, nothing is recorded. You can also object at any time by writing to us (Art. 21 GDPR).

4. Settings stored in your browser

If you choose a language for the summaries (EN, DE or RU), or open the map of a vote, your browser remembers this choice in its local storage, so that the next resolution opens the same way. These settings stay on your device, are never sent to us, and you can delete them at any time in your browser settings.

5. Contacting us by email

If you write to us, we use your email address and your message only to answer you (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and delete them when they are no longer needed, unless we are legally required to keep them.

6. Links to the United Nations

Resolution texts and records are linked to the UN Official Document System and the UN Digital Library. Nothing is loaded from there until you click such a link. After that, the privacy policy of the United Nations applies.

7. AI summaries

The summaries and topics are generated from the official resolution texts with the DeepSeek API. Only these public documents are sent there — never any data about visitors.

8. Your rights

You have the right to access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object (Art. 21). Please note that we cannot link the statistics to a person, so we usually cannot find records about you (Art. 11 GDPR).

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU member state where you live or work (Art. 77 GDPR).

There is no automated decision-making, and you are not obliged to provide any data to use the site.
